I truly loved the Istanbul Modern Art Museum. So many of the pieces were great works of art. I felt terrible in my art education that while I can get 10/10 on pop art history exams that focus on European art - English, French, German, Belgium, Spanish, Dutch, - I didn’t know a single one of these truly exquisite works of fine art. The whole museum was a piece of art itself. Scuptures and movie pieces and a particularly telling work called Beirut. There was such vision here and some extremely innovative ideas. All round it was an experience I was very thankful to my guide Mehmet Tetik (www.turkishguides.org\tetik) for sharing with me . The fact is I’d never have considered going to a Turkish Modern Art museum simply out of pure ignorance. Mehmet suggested it. I said alright. And then I was enriched.
There was also an exhibit dedicated to Turkish film. Again I was shocked at my ignorance. I might have recognized a couple of actors and actresses but I’d never be able to name them. Further I’d not seen any of the films yet they have millions of followers. Turkish film is second only to India in it’s number of viewers. Hollywood comes in third. I felt decidedly parochial and thankful for Mehmet’s comments.
We had a lovely lunch in the adjoining restaurant. The sea bass was superb. The view of Istanbul excellent.
