1986 - 34 yo

1986 the year I turned 34 was also the year I graduated University of Manitoba as a Specialist and Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine - Psychiatry.  I’d also leave Winnipeg for California then come up to Vancouver to attend the 1986 World Exposition on Transportation and Communication - Expo 86.  I was driving my Baha Bug Pendergast and would take my position as psychiatrist at Vancouver General Hospital in the psychiatry emergency and become a Clinical Lecturer at UBC Faculty of Medicine.

It was the year tha the MIR space station was launched. It was the year that Christopher Isherwood died and Lindsay Lohan was born.  Brain the first computer virus against MS Dos was developed in Pakistan.  Gorbachev unveiled his program of Glasnost and Perestroika.  Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson.  The Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated.  The Troubles continued in Ireland with fighting between the Royal Ulter Constabulary and the Irish Republican Army. Baby doc fled Haiti after 28 years of rule.  Halley’s comet reached it’s perihelion.  There were various bombings around the world. The Chernobyl Disaster occurred killing more than 4000 people with radioactive fall out forcing the resettling of another 350,000. South Africa declares a state of emergency. Desmond Tutu becomes the first black Anglican bishop in South Africa.  TASCC, the Chalk River Cyclotron opens.  Phantom of the Opera opens. The Iran Contra affair comes to light. 3D printing becomes commercially available.  The Northern Marianas Islands enters political union with the US. L.Ron Hubbard dies. Frank Herbert dies. Krishnamurti dies. James Cagney dies. I know more people dying who have made a name for themselves than those being born who may yet not have had time to make a name for themselves.  Elie Wiesel is given the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Robert Palmer’s Song, Addicted to Love is playing on the radio. Whitney Huston, Steve Winwood, Carly Simon, the Rolling Stones all have new hits. When I was in California’s I was listening to Huey Lewis and the News. Non Jovi and Madonna have songs. John Cougar Melloncamp has Small Town and Rock in the USA. ZZ Top has Sleeping Bag.
