Burnaby after the Bomb Cyclone hits west coast

I pulled in my awning last night. My home was shaking.  Madigan was barking. I consider first an earth quake or someone hitting my home. The convulsive nature of the movement told me it was the awning. I rolled it in with some difficulty noting the heavy rain I’d only noticed then.  Laura had texted me her building was shaking.  On facebook Anita said their power was out. I was thankful for my generator.
The weather station at the air port said we had 40 knot/hour winds gusting to 50’s.  On the Beaufort scale that was gale conditions. I’d sailed uncomfortably in these often.  I like4 30 knots and 40 at most or I was pulling sails. I’d been in storms and hurricanes but at sea with lots of open water I just had to face my fear with the cat and dog.  On land I’d no such fear.  There were 70 km to 100 km winds on the west coast.  I’d been knocked down in the Juan de Fuca so know that South easterlies out there are a major concern. Tofino would be wild.  Here in Burnaby we were okay.  I did see flashes on the power lines so knew conductors were blowing off to the west.  Exciting times.  I’m awed by the force of nature, humbled really.
I stayed home after walking Madigan before the rains came.  I ‘d had a long day, driven into Doc Side and home, then seen patients virtually into the evening. I considered going out for fast food but remember the chilli I had in Tupperware.  Thank God for microwave.  With toast I was fine..
The furnace kept me warm with the dancing flames of the electric fireplace.  I watched Cross occasionally glanced at Facebook to see how others were handling the weather.
Sadly the crazy weather change cult were crying that it was the act of GAIA their god and we would all die because we’d used plastic.  The worst of the fools is Trudeau who sounds more and more like a deranged televangelist demanded more taxes or your genitals would shovel and we’d all be dead because you didn’t take him seriously enough. More doomsaying going on about monkey virus.  Then demented Joe Biden tells Zelenskyy to send long range missiles into Russia.  Trump is to take presidency Jan 6 and had already spoken to Putin about Peace talks.  But no, the Democrats and Kamala want war and any means to maintain power. They really are afraid of what may come to light when they can no longer control the FBI. It’s like the Stazi and the fall the East Germany.
Democrats who had accused the Republicans of being violent and not want to turn in their guns to the Democrats are now calling for Civil War and the assassination of Trumps. He’s survived two actual attempts by the grace of God.  The US Democrats seem as deranged as Trudeau and I just wonder what drugs they’re on.  The Chinese have been caught saying they manipulated the last TRudeau election with interference in a crucial 40 seats.
I’m normally immune3 to doom zooming. If it doesn’t bleed it doesn’t lead.  But Trudeau wanting WWW3 is concerning given what a foolish weak coward he is.
My interest is I’m planning to drive south with truck and camper to spend a couple of months working from home in the south. I’d hoped to go to Rosario in Mexico even but wonder if Southern California will be safe.  I can just detour to Yuma where I’ve been the last two winters.  It’s safe and solid so that may be a plan.
I am reading Richard Rohr’s Breathing Underwater. Rather I’m listening to the audio book. John gave me thee book years ago and I read it then.  Now I’m enjoying revisiting it the same way I enjoyed revisiting Mario de Beauregard and Evelyn Underwood,
Today I look forward to my meeting as usual. I’m hope the Merry Maids come this week but it may be next week. I’ m taking the truck in for service tomorrow and may make a chiropractor apt with Dr. Ready for the weekend,  The doctors are having their Christmas meeting Sunday morning,  I did enjoy church last week,  I’ve tickets for Handel’s Messiah and the VSO .  Two nights at the Orpheum coming up. Life is good.
I’m thankful. I’m trying to be present always. Keep your head in the same place and time your ass is!  It resonates with me, But I do enjoy the moments of nostalgia. I was touched for a week there remembering coming home from school to have Mom waiting with tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of milk.  I loved that she had a Star Trek themed birthday party. I can think or mom and dad and my brother Ron and be thoroughly touched to the heart such that tears some to my eyes. I’m so thankful that I’m beyond the time when all I remembered was trauma and loss. Now the good times and they were mostly good times come to mind,
Thank you Jesus.

Oceanside - rain storms continue

Several times through the night I was worken by the hard deluge. Heavy loud raining and winds shaking the camper.  It only lasted a half hour and then lessened to steady rain. I got up to pee, reassured Madigan and went back to sleep. This morning I’m tired but thankful that the clouds broke and the sun came out, This gave me time to walk Madigan who started the day well with a big poop and lots of sniffing,  He’s happy and having his morning nap on the table.  I’ve had a coffee and texted Laura
The rains come and go with moments of sun. Oceanside weather reports and warnings of flooding continue.  Laura says Mexico is having problems now.  The Pineappe Express.
I am hoping to leave Friday but the weather report says that this weather may continue till Saturday.  I’m ready to move on,
People I talk to ask how my ‘vacation’ is? And a part of me shudders. I work Monday to Thursday virtual, a 35 hour work week, part time considering a lifetime of 80 to 120 hour work week.  I’ve not have a regular government or union job. I’ve been a self employed consultant and identify with the truckers and the farmers now who are being attacked by big government. All of us who are the workers have carried this cancers of tax and regulations that no longer, in my opinion, contributes.  There’s a sweet spot between left and right, communists and capitalism.  Canada is now ‘far left’ with censorship, propaganda working for WEF and Beijing with Trudeau devastating the working middle class and western canada. The slackards of privilege white French Quebec continue to raise thee cost of everything Canadian. There’s now an increasing white and blue collar welfare,
I’m not on ‘vacation’ four days a week but yes my weekends are in Paradise. I’m thankful for that. It’s taken a lot of saving and working to here and to be consistently supportive of others. I don’t think many understand what ‘steady eddies’ like I am.  I also don’t have sickleave , benefits , pension, or days off. The media is dominated by CBC Pravda type corruptions and never praises the people who work two and three jobs. I’ve done that most of my life and certainly did it for school and now so many of my patients are the unsung hero’s working those jobs and doing night school all the while a trust fund arrogant toddler full of evil and corruption abused the old stock Canadian values and wars on the people who live here and made this country. All the institutions developed based on Judeo Christian ,western and protestant work ethic are being taken over by those who come from countries of slaves and cowards who haven’t stood up to their royality or dictatorship so just see ‘every man’ for himself . I loved Maher’s utube on Musical Materialism.  The descent into money and money as all.
Now I’m striving to be better, I haven’t done St. Francis or Buddha. I’ve worked and served and now deal with the resentment that Trudeau as his father before him abuse the elderly and dazzle the young,  Was it always that young people could be conned by glitter and didn’t understand substance.  I miss my Mom and Dad who were the salt of the earth and the karma of my experience today is my lack of appreciation for their wisdom. I was no better than the young today but my youth ended at 25 and I see so many who are playing teen ager like the PM well into their 30’s and 40’s.
My own fiscal problems were related to marrying women who themselves had no appreciation of economics or self restraint but looking back I see they learned.  We learned from our time together.  When we love we share traits and lessons.  The gullible becomes toughened by the cynical and antisocial,  I still catch myself blaming and must repeatedly remember that my ex’s gained and lost as much with me as I with them. The shame in the world today is the cultural Marxism of selected ‘scapegoats’ in their victim/victimizer games, with divorced men being evil and divorced women being long suffering.  It’s the black and white game and here I’m doing the young and old, All the divide and conquer that fuels the left and our Liberal government is so easy to fall into.
Meanwhile I’m in comfort here.  With my coffee maker refridgerator hot water tank and heater,  I’ve Star Linkk and Apple Computer and IPad. I love zoom and doxy.me.  My dog is well. I’m well.  The rain comes and goes and doesn’t interfere in today.  I am avoiding riding my motorcycle and talking short walks but it’s warm and most of day I have only the screen door closed.
Thank you God for all my blessings. Help me increase in an Attitude of Gratitude and grow in my understanding and love for all in the world. Guide me and show me the way.  Lead me today. Help me criticize less and create more.  Thank you

Good morning October

The rains are here. The cold winds begin to blow. I’m thankful for the roof, fireplace and furnace. I got out the winter comforter last night and slept soundly.  The night before my toes had been cold.  Little things count.  These changes of Weather that Carne Fraudsters have given a pseudoscience name and called Climate Change are making a few people very rich while the rest of us carry on. Carbon is the element of life. They’re taxing it and calling it pollutants. The schools really were better in my day. We learned basic biology and science rather than being left to be filled by political charlatans.  When will Al Gore be arrested?

They are forever talking of ‘redistribution of wealth’ but never of the wealth of cronies in the crony world of crony socialism and crony capitalism.  Runny dogs the lots of them.  I’m uncertain what the day will bring.

I like that I have somewhere to go. There are fine people I’m going to be joining. As Buddhism says I’m doing ‘right livelihood.’  And what would I do if I didn’t work today, go for coffee, go to a meeting, walk the dogs, just more of what I did on the weekend.  And why is the weekend so enjoyable , because of the order and discipline and control of work days by comparison to the freedom and chaos of the weekend.  So what would weather be without it’s mood swings.  There is no ‘new’ global warming, just a longer cycle like we’ve had before.

As I once wrote, when the leadership build underground and insist that coastal cities move inward, I’ll take these lying hustlers seriously but for now I recognize a money making scam. This is todays , Emperor has new clothes and let me sell you some swamp land in Florida.

I did talk to a retired friend and enjoyed their ‘lighter load’, more time to get things done, less days of work and less hours and slower pace. I was envious of their sense of time. They felt we who worked were really harried and that the city was hollow and hasty while their life in the country was more healthy and human.  I’ve done both and frankly am not yet ready to go to pasture but it sure does sound great.  The city is lively and I’m now wondering what cultural events I should see. I am looking at the Opera and Early Music Society and Vancouver Symphony and thinking can I afford that, do I have the time, will I want to go.  There’s Massey Hall and it’s whole range of offerings I just saw.

In the country I remember the sunsets and sun rises were more spectacular and I loved talking to the chickens and cows. I’d love to be sailing along a coast with fair winds and following seas too but God has me here.  I’m supposed to be focussing on the present , being on call to God for his next option of service.

I’m trying to follow Jesus as faithfully as I can. Not a particularly good Christian. Mediocre really. I’ve considered the billions and the accomplishments of others and I’m no longer deluded into thinking I’m special, except as a child of God.  I’m good enough, okay but will continue to reach for the impossible star.

Please God let me know you today. Holy Spirit Come.  Let me be of maximum service but show me the way and let me do my best without getting lost in the factory sense of the city.  Thank you God for all your blessings. Thank you most for Gilbert, George, family and friends and those I can be of help to today.  Thank you Jesus.

Emotional Problem Solving

I always wondered why my parents talked about the weather so much but now I know.  Grandad was a rancher and dad was an engineer.  Grandmother was a farm woman and mom was a journalist home maker.  They had a whole lot of experience between them.  They paid attention to the world around them and people.  They drew on this  vast wealth of ‘traditional’ and ‘conventional wisdom’ .

When something wasn’t right with them they first considered the WEATHER.  They didn’t think that they should kill themselves, divorce or change their jobs.  They just knew that commonly people are affected by the Weather.  It’s even been shown that on Wall Street trading increases on sunny days and decreases on rainy days.  It’s really not rocket science.
Next thing the old people talked about was the GOVERNMENT. Whenever anyone felt badly and were uncertain of the cause they considered the influence of Government on the overall well being of people.  Government decisions can make or break a country and can destroy individuals lives with their wars, tax programs, corruption, graft and deceit.  Throughout history next to the natural catastrophes caused by Weather, Government is the greatest source of catastrophe and illness.  That said we all know that if the Government is good and respectable and responsible there really can be peace and love in the valley.  When Governments are mature and thoughtful and productive not wasteful the society as a whole improves with general well being spreading through the land.
Old people also realized that FINANCES were a major source of anxiety and depression.  Not only research but common sense tell us that the poorer one is the more one is at risk for negative events and the more negative events one encounters.  This was truer before the social ‘net’ of modern societies which ‘catch’ people when they fall.  There’s loans, disability, welfare, food lines and charity, all manner of resources that protect one from the ravages of starvation and ‘debtors prisons’.  In some Moslem countries slavery still persists so it’s really not in some distant past that financial problems lead to really bad outcomes.  We really take this granted often simply because our education has been basically shoddy and substandard.
Naturally most of these social security developments in the First world are not present in the Third World. Their development also did not occur in a variety of cultures and historical societies but are increasingly taken for granted in the present day democratic societies most of which began in the enlightened Christian cultures which believed in ‘second chances’.  By contrast this was not a part of the ‘law of the jungle’ or ‘social darwinism’.  It’s a whole separate history to follow the rise of ‘charity’ for ‘strangers’ not just family and tribe but ‘outsiders’ and consider this by culture and religion because again it’s something most simply take for granted not realizing how unique and extraordinary this is.
That said there’s a serious issue of ‘relative wealth’ in that people adapt to certain ‘incomes’ and ‘financial capacities’ and experience loss of ‘status’ with any reduction in FINANCIAL SECURITY.  So old people had savings and made sound investments and recognized that ‘bad times’ could come. Farmers had to save for bad weather years, the droughts, and families ‘saved’ for sickness as sickness was commonly associate with loss of work capacity.  When a person felt badly they commonly recognized that they were fundamentally anxious because of FINANCES and set about remedying this by reducing unnecessary spending and looking for ‘extra work’ to increase savings and security.
HEALTH is commonly discussed by middle aged and older people. Young people are generally healthy unless they have chronic illness from childhood. Most take their ‘good health’ and lots of energy and ability to go without sleep or meals for granted yet as they get older commonly they don’t realize that their well being is directly related to their overall physical HEALTH.  When a person sees a psychiatrist the first thing the psychiatrist considers in investigating a person’s anxiety or depression is whether there is a physical cause for negative change, how long that negative change has been developing and if this might not just be a product of a temporary illness, like a flu or ‘something that’s going around’.  Old people with a variety of chronic illness, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, bowel diseases, lung diseases will simply consider that a bad day or week or month may be because their physical illness is worse. Chronic physical illness, like all psychosomatic illness responds to external stresses but can be it’s own source of stress.  When I’m well a hemorrhoid might not bother me but when I’m already anxious or depressed the bleeding hemorrhoid, a really minor health problem, may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It’s because of this that people faced with general malaise, anxiety or depression, or just a lack of well being and a sense they’re not happy as they might be, commonly go to their general practitioner and discuss their health concerns with them or talk about their HEALTH with their friends and family.  Maybe an antibiotics which cures a urinary tract infection is all that is necessary to right the problem. Maybe a change in diet or exercise or an increase in an anti inflammatory medications is sufficient.
Successful people faced with lack of happiness, a sense of feeling that they are not enjoying life, feelings of emptiness, or too much anxiety and maybe a sense of depression consider early their RECREATIONS.  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The World Health Organization took Freud’s simple definition of Mental Health, ‘the ability to work and love’ and extended it over two full pages but really only added that Mental Health is the ‘ability to work, love and play”.  A lot of people have really barren personal lives yet somehow expect they should be happy. The adage is ‘Misery Loves Company’ and as we are ‘herd animals’ we need social outlets. Maybe our work is not that social or our family just not enough. A major proportion of todays’ divorces occur because young people want their partners to be their ‘all’, (friend, parent, therapist, lover, cook, parent, cheerleader, etc ,etc).  We all come from a tribal society where everyone was interconnected and all had close to dozens, a hundred or more people to turn to.  Today often people’s lives are sterile.  They work and eat and sleep and wonder why they suffer anxiety or depression.  Really , they need to get involved, take up some ‘sport’ even if it’s just, walking with a group.  There are countless clubs, activities, ‘MEET UPS’ on the Internet, and community organizations, and schools, churches and temples.  Really, commonly a person’s life is ‘boring’ because they are ‘boring’ and don’t have any activities in their life because of their narcissism and selfishness and unwillingness to ‘SHARE THEIR TIME”.  These people are time hoarders but like most entitleed people want something for nothing.  Yet a problem shared is a problem halved and loneliness in modern society is so often described as ‘anxiety’ or ‘depression’.
FRIENDS are either as source of joy or a drain. Some are down right ‘soul suckers’ and others are chronic ‘kafetches’.  Many are ‘takers’ and ultimately one has to seriously consider how much time one has to be an emotional cheer leader of those who haven’t a minor or occasional problem but have a chronic recurrent unrellenting series of crisis.  In life saving the lifeguard is taught to swim out to help but not let the drowning person pull them down with them.  Whole communities are alcoholic or drug addicted and frankly some people need to get right out of these hell holes to get away from those who would drag themdown.  In Canada and in communist countries in general there is a phenomena called the ‘tall poppy’ syndrome which means that the ‘group’  because of some ideology actively stop those around them progressing.  They chop down the ‘tall poppy’ or ‘chop off the heads of others to make themselves look taller’.  In some tribal communities those who are doing well will have their homes broken into and wealth stolen or even have their house burnt down.  Many communities of ‘friends’ are gang like where the expectations of the ‘group ‘ is for the ‘individual’ who succeeds to ‘share ‘ his success yet this ideology destroys initiative.  Why should one person ‘work’ at an extra job and then share the reward with those who didn’t put out the effort.  A lot of individual lack of success is associated with ‘friends’ who are negative and ‘belittling’.  Being around people who say ‘nothing is going to change’, ‘life suck’s’ and various other ‘depressive statements’ is Depressing.  By contrast those who succeed and are happy commonly are surrounded by positive people. People who are enlightened are generally encouraging and supportive of those who wish to learn and excel but shy away from those who live by stealing and fawning relationships.  It’s often that we don’t have to  ‘end’ a relationship but rathe that we need to ‘distance’ ourselves or ‘spend less time’ with people who are ‘wallowing’ in their negativity
WORK is often a source of anxiety and depression but few throughout history had the LUXURY of NOT WORKING or even CHANGING THEIR JOBS.  So many accepting that work is principally to pay for the physiological needs, and provide fundamental food, clothing, and shelter simply accept their work.  They stay in less than perfect jobs because they see that those who jump around from job to job commonly ‘take their own selves ‘ with them.  PERSONALITY DISORDERS are primarily identified by the inability of an individual to stay at one job for a year. A red flag goes up with those who are workers when a person can’t last a year in the ‘class’.  Our school system was supposed to provide this basic capacity.  4 seasons, one job.  Admittedly there’s many factors to be considered but there is a direct correlation of “success’ and ‘happiness’ and ‘general well being’ for those who ‘stay’ at a position. There’s even a thing called ‘position authority’ which gives status to even a bull frog in one pond that stays rather than jumping from pond to pond.  Work is not only associated with activity which by itself is healthy but its a place of socialization which is also healthy. Buddhists even designate ‘RIGHT LIVELIHOOD” as essential to enlightenment recognizing that a lot of jobs intrinsically are depressing, risky, unhealthy or simply dehumanizing.  Prostitutes collectively are unhappy even though many ‘chose’ the job for quick wealth  It just doesn’t have the long term benefits that teaching children has.  Survey a hundred prostitutes and a hundred school teachers and the evidence is overwhelming that prostitution isn’t a very ‘high quality’ job.  The whole job world is laid out in terms of education, financial reward, risk, and effort.  Entrance level jobs have the real advantage they need low education but they commonly lack security and rarely have long term financial reward.  One has to seriously consider their work in light of what they want and what their present and future desires and needs are. All too often people have been satisfied with a particular job and had a whole lot of short term benefits from that job only to find that one day the job didn’t have longevity. This occurs with athletes and commonly with dancers.  If one doesn’t have a fall back plan or a plan to progress then it’s not uncommon for crisis to arise which could well have been foreseen and prepared for.  In today’s world it is expect that people will have three careers minimum in a lifetime and those who are “coasting’ will likely encounter job problems. While the ‘coasters’ are blaming everyone and everything for their loss of work, the rest have been upgrading their skills and taking extra training at night anticipating that their job as a ‘steam engineer’ is less than permanent.
FAMILY is a fixed ingredient. Those who are fortunate are born in loving families and learn the ART OF LOVING (see Erickson) and know that LOVE Is not something that just “HAPPENS” but needs to be nurtured and maintained.  Successful happy families pass on the SKILLS for happiness to their children and commonly this learning leads to generations of success whereas the poor believe the success is only a product of the individuals in this segment of society starting with a ‘financial nest egg’.  If this were true then those who won LOTTERIES would be similar examples of personal and societal success.   However,  commonly those who ‘win lotteries’ lose them just as quickly.  One of the reasons AID works so poorly is that it doesn’t ‘teach’ people how to produce more successfully but only cares for their needs that one day. Often what a family teaches is the cornerstone to the success of the members whereas equally so a family can be perpetrating ‘self defeating’ ideologies.  It is important to remember if we had sent Einstein to a tribe of Cannibals they would have thought him a tough rooster at best and learned nothing about energy and relativity because they were simply not capable of appreciating the genius of the man.
Therapy was not about ‘rejecting family’ or dishing parents but about sorting out the useful teaching from the commonly once useful but now outdated ideas.  A mother might teach her daughter to avoid black men because when she grew up black men were migrant and poor but today that very statement might be a limiting ideology if the majority of black men in the community were hard working successful individuals.  If a person is a live today it’s thanks to the parents simply not killing them when they were vulnerable.  Since life if fundamental and without it all else is nothing all parents are 50% good.  Fish eat their eggs and reptiles leave them to fend for themselves.  Therapy isn’t supposed to be about ‘blaming’ but rather about understanding and learning from the past to make the present and future better.  Therefore each individual must recognize the contribution of history and not dish it outright.  Further today people commonly judge the past by the yardstick of their own limited understanding.  Dickens said, “it was the best of times and worst of times’ and this is true for all times. The trick is to be selective, learn from and make valuable alliances. Family are the main stay of society and the STATE is threatened most by family. Alone individuals are likely to perish but the capacity to form networks and communities is central to the happiness of individuals. This begins with the family.  When I worked with the most mentally ill they commonly had the worst family relationships and least social skills.  If the family can be strengthened most commonly success for individuals follows.
The LOVED ONE, the PARTNER, the most intimate sexual partner has through all cultures and classes been associated with the greatest joy and happiness at some time.    Many a person has said that their life is made by the finding and nurturing of their soulmate.  This is the person they marry. This is the person we have sex with. Sexual relationships are limited to those who we are willing to be most intimate with, most vulnerable with, closest too.  A ‘casual relationship’ is never truly casual but marriages and long term sexual relationships define emotional landscapes for all.  The Loved One is the most important person in a person’s network of relationships. That person is commonly the father or mother of the children, the most important person in the family, and the one who can most affect a person’s emotional life positively or negatively.
IF mental health is the ability to love, work and play, then it follows that a person without work or school, without a Loved One or Family or Friends would at most register ’30’% generally on a happiness scale. Those who lack that most important cherry on the happiness cake , the loved and loving one, at best might only approach a “B” grade  in the overall likelihood of general well being. There are clearly exceptions, saints, heroes, hermits but generally speaking our sense of well being follows from this simple analysis.
Now the must successful and mature people do not ‘change’ their ‘loved one’ or their ‘job’ first but progress through an analysis of what is lacking in their lives by starting at the outside.  Maybe it’s just a bad hair lousy weather day and that one could consider buying and umbrella or taking a vacation to the hot spot or improving the use of sunscreen.  There’s a whole lot of solutions to the ‘weather’ problems. I took up cross country skiing when the ‘weather’ was forcing me to curtail outside activities and I felt a prisoner in the winter city.  My general well being improved immensely. My friend has made a point of cycling and winter swimming at Wreck beach at least twice a week ‘getting outside’ and ‘facing the elements’ and their sense of well being and decrease in anxiety is amazing to see.
Recently a whole group of people rioted because they didn’t like the government but studies showed that 70% hadn’t voted.  Most of these government activist complainer types commonly don’t even join a political party.  A friend is a professor of political sciences and I watched her acquire her wisdom and generally amazing calmness around matters political by gaining in depth knowledge about the mechanisms of government, anthropology, sociology and the misinformation of media and propaganda.  When she was a student government most upset her but today she’s probably the least ‘upset’ person I know in this regard because she is actively participating in government, making things better for herself and other individuals.
Countless times I’ve seen people’s general malaise and depression a product of something so simple medically as hypothyroidism.  Depression and anxiety are commonly the presenting symptoms of countless treatable illnesses. Increasingly most depression and anxiety I see has it’s roots in addictions, substance abuse, alcoholism, pornography, eating disorders.
Work problems arise in every job and in every life but rather the ‘take this job and shove it’ over the years mature individuals have formed unions, discussed the negatives of their job with co workers, counsellors and even the boss.  These minor changes in a person’s life can reap amazing results in solving emotional problems
Obviously spending less time with a ‘soul sucker’ , that constantly ‘needy’ , person always bitter and always complaining, will lead to less stress and more room for positive relationships.  Maintaining contact with family but modulating the time and distance of the relationships is a sure fire way of improving one’s happiness simply because these are the template of all relationships that follow and the source of so much joy for those whose lives are most successful.
Finally the most mentally ill commonly admit to having their longest intimate relationship as under a year, under five years, or under 10 years.  Relationships are like vehicles and if you keep crashing or trading in your primary vehicle for relational happiness then you really would benefit from seeing a psychiatrist not to discuss what the partner is doing wrong but to learn what others do right and what you are doing wrong.  The Gottman Institute “love labs’ studies successful happy couples and unhappy couples and scientifically came up with a set of rules that are simply not rocket science but really do give a decent basis for  setting up or repairing broken relationships before they get trashed by this ‘throwaway unhappy society’
The main reason I wrote this though was to simply encourage people to consider problem solving from the weather inward to work and loved one rather than dumping the job and life partner only to find it El Nino was all that was wrong and if you’d waited a year the weather would have improved and you could have saved the cost and pain of trashing work and love.
Finally spirituality is associated with the greatest happiness and joy for most people.  Research shows that spiritual people are overall happier and more prosperous with greater security and success. This doesn’t mean any one religion or any one moral prescription is right but it does tend to challenge atheist political idealogies that reject the spiritual community lives of the most successful individuals in society.  Perhaps when all else fails or earlier ,one might consider, as Victor Frankl, the psychiatrist who survived Auswitch, encouraged, asking yourself "what is the meaning of life”.  What is your relationship to God   Or  perhaps change the word, God, to  the GOOD.  What is the Good to you or what is the GOOD LIFE.  Often emotional problems solving follows ‘reframing’ the question'.
In the end it’s your life.  Enjoy.

St. Petersburg - Rainy Cold Day

Barrett told me the latitude of St. Petersburg is about the same as Anchorage.  “When people tell me about the ‘White Nights’, I tell them I get that in Anchorage”.  Apparently our overnight train went  closely north out of Moscow.  It was too hot the first day we arrived, like in Moscow, almost Mexican hot. Then overnight the clouds came and we were chilly in jackets and hats in the cold wind and drizzle yesterday.  At times I felt like Winnipeg Spring. But the nearby Bay of Finland and harbour gives the air that Vancouver nearby sea scent.  There’s pigeons but I’ve not seen the sea gulls of port towns yet.
Today the rain is heavy.  Looking outside I see umbrellas everywhere as if I was transported back to Vancouver.  I suffered the heat and now I’m about to suffer the wet and cold.  I found myself thinking of Jimmy Buffet’s, tropical,  Changes in Latitude - Changes in Attitude song.  Without the sun, I’m dreary as the day. We’re planning to visit the Peter and Paul Fortress. This was where Peter laid the first foundations for what has become this great city of St. Petersburg.
Yesterday I saw fur stores. The Russian art shows sleighs and skis.  I talked with Vlad about hockey.  Jamaicans don’t know what they’re missing. Life maybe a beach for some but without the variety and challenge there’s lethargy and waste. I remember languishing in the Mexican summer, the year I lived there. I couldn’t wait to get out in my sailboat just for the breeze that made the weather tolerable. Here I’ll buy an umbrella though my Vancouver shell jacket and Montreal beret are adequate.  Were I here in winter I’d dress like I did in Winnipeg, parka, fur hats, long johns mittens and boots.  It is easier to adapt to the persistent climates than the mercurial politics.
There has been recurrent flooding in St. Petersburg.  With rising seas it’s likely going to have to invest in higher walls for the canals.  I remember Winnipeg flooding, flood ways, dikes and sandbagging.  Nature is forever offering challenging.  The English spoke of the ‘oppressive’ climate of India and moved out of the cities to the hills away from mosquitoes and squalor.  Gandhi in contrast adapted to his climate called the British ‘oppressive’.
Here about I’m aware that extraordinary changes have occurred in a couple of decades. We sat in a ‘post soviet’ cafe and ate lunch under the stark authoritarian parental posters of the old regime.  Vlad had apparently picked this place because it was the least expensive of cafes in the downtown with the best of food.  Barrett liked the posters. Het!!
Watching the ticket offices and some of the other civil servant processes occurring I intuit an irritability even greater than in the west.  The notion of ‘servant’ is new to the government officials and one imagines some are disillusioned by this new world. Certainly the ‘customer’ doesn’t rule yet as in Canada.  There we all live in terror daily fearing summons to the complaints department, law suits or civil rights tribunals.  There is a sense of freedom here.  But is that simply a changing of the guard?  A brief respite of weather.
The elite have their own issues.  It’s often harder to hold onto power than it is to acquire it.  "Rags to riches in three generation and riches to rags to one”, is the old truism. It applies to empires as well with each the world has known lasting less and less time.  Alexander’s empire and the Roman Empire lasted an infinity compared to the British. America and the USSR were johnny come late lies.  China and India are in the offings now while Africa and South America languish.
Meanwhile I’m thankful to have brought a water resistant shell jacket.  All the riches are naught when one is without basic comforts such as jackets and umbrellas. IMG 5005DSCN1776DSCN1767DSCN1701DSCN1716DSCN1764DSCN1675DSCN1750DSCN1726DSCN1620DSCN1614DSCN1610DSCN1609DSCN1602DSCN1600

CBC Radio Programs

I'm often critical of CBC Radio news coverage as politically correct left wing propaganda. Issues I'm personally involved with and know thoroughly well have been skewed so far left of centre as to be ill recognizable. That said, CBC Radio has so much redeeming programming it's hard to be angry at it, collectively over, what sounds so often like a pot smoking News Department.
By contrast the following must be said in defence of CBC Radio.

1. CBC's weather coverage and traffic coverage locally are world class.

2. CBC's immediate reporting on emergencies and catastrophes is excellent. They do report the immediate 'facts' well even if their later analysis and 'interpretations' maybe be off as far as Toronto and Montreal management can be from the rest of the country.

3. Individual programs are extraordinarily well produced, informative and highly entertaining. Tapestry with Mary Hynes is one such program. It is a weekly exploration of spirituality, religion and search for meaning. The most recent one I hear Prayers: the Small but Mighty was a blessing indeed.

 4. Quirks and Quarks is especially good. Given the abysmal illiteracy of North Americans collectively in matters scientific this show is genius. Bob McDonald, the host does a fabulous job of clarifying extremely complex ideas and presenting them in a way that engages listeners. You don't need to be a PhD to enjoy the show but the show goes along way to encouraging higher learning and research. It's truly amazing. If we ever hope to see Canada again competitive with the likes of students in India and China then we really need to see a lot more of this kind of programming that informs people of the 'facts' of the world rather than going on and on about the 'politically correct' ideas regarding the world we live in. To hear people talking about 'global warming' it's a team sport event and the ignorance regarding the science surrounding the controversy about what choices can be made in face of it is appalling reflection of the inadequancy of our education system and media coverage of 'scientific' issues.

5. Vinyl Cafe Stories with Stuart McLean are sheer brilliance and a true delight. I have listened to Stuart whatever chance I can get and bought several of his books.  I'm even planning on attending a show if ever I get a chance. Stuart is one of the most sensitive and humorous men I've ever heard making him a Gandhi,  Churchill,  Einstein and Shakespeare  of  humor to my ears.  In Canadian writing he is a direct descendent of the likes of Robertson Davies and early Margaret Atwood.

6. Writers and Company and The Next Chapter are both excellent programs dealing with the latest books being published in Canada. I'm always delighted to know who wins the Booker and was so thankful to the CBC for it's interview of authors in competitions, especially the interesting presentations of excerpts from competing writers. So often I've been on a long drive or caught in traffic and been thoroughly engaged by this kind of programming, excellent interviewing and a leading Canadian writer discussing the ideas and story of their latest book.

7. The Debaters is truly funny. Canadians have a long history of world class comedy and Debaters is a show case for the latest in this genre. It is so well constructed and so fast that I'm surprised how many laughs I get in what is often only a few minutes of listening I might have while grabbing a lunch time snack.

8. Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap is the very best of Rock and Roll. I've always loved Randy Bachman's music but to hear his selection of songs in the way he sees them, with their personal history and the stories has made a long drive home seem to short if I have to turn off the car radio and go inside. Frankly I've often gone inside and turned on another radio to continue to hear Randy's selection and stories. This is my all time favourite music show. I love when he and his wife share together too. They really make such loving music.

9. Ideas has often been good. It can be hit or miss for me but I really have enjoyed listening at times.

10. White Coat, Black Art with Dr. Brian Goldberg is simply excellent. Brian Goldberg presents the latest in medical research, discoveries and controversies in the most insightful and amazing way.

There's 10 good reasons for CBC to be saved from being smote by a wrathful God of News who can't stand that a national tax funded broadcasting corporation should skew it's reporting to such an elitist minority audience. The sad fact is the programs I've cited, which are better than so much of even what big funded organizations like BBC, CNN and PBS do, are limited by carrying the painful baggage of outdated political reporting.

I can't help but think that if Brian Goldberg and Randy Bachman were asked to heal and tune up the CBC News Department Canadians would collectively benefit from the revitalization and on key relevance that would result. Let Stuard McLean at the CBC News Department and we'd finally get stories worth listening to. Steve Patterson's Debaters does a better job of presenting both sides of a discussion in a truly hilarious way that one can only think if he had a go at the CBC News Department we'd hear much more balanced and broader based reporting. I can't help but think that Mary Hynes would do well to hold an exorcism in the CBC News Department.

Frankly the CBC has so much heart and soul it's wrong that it's news should so often be so politically stupid.

For the programs I've cited alone, and there are a lot of other good programs, like these on CBC, their gardening shows, the opera, symphony, CBC Radio remains programmed into my car radio and most often the first or second show I listen to. And if I ever get any of the above programs on I don't change the channel. The ones I've cited are all worth listening to from beginning to end. I even get podcasts of these programs. That's how good CBC can be.
