Burnaby - ODAAT

I am in my Thor Hurricane Class A Motorhome.  I’m 73 years old.  Still working. Today is Monday and I have a virtual clinic booked all day. It tires me but I love to be of service. I enjoy the routine.  This year and next are planned around my continued work., I’m looking forward to going south this year to LA and Algadones,  I heard that Dr. Jordan Peterson, whose book, “We who wrestle with God” I’m listening to on Audible now, has moved to Arizona.  My favourite place right now is Fountain of Youth nd Bombay Beach Southern California.  For now I’m loving Burnaby. The weather is wonderful.
I’ve had an incredible journey these last few months, returning from Southern California in my Ford Truck and Adventureer Camper with the Vespa.  I left that at the Chilliwack RV Storage and came back to my Fuzion RV in my Mini.  I took Laura to Harrison Hotsprings, We had a lovely weekend enjoying walks round the pond and hotsprings in the spa.
I’d not been able to unload my Camper because of damage and weakness at the passenger side Lazy Jack.  That meant I didn’t have the truck to move the RV if I needed to. I confess I felt stranded and an acutely need for a self propelled home.  I’d liked the camper and truck but they were small.  The Fuzion was large enough though I’d had the problem with mice and I didn’t like the garage office.  I’d contemplated motorhomes for years.  Dad and Mom had their Queen they loved and visited Good Sam campgrounds with.
The political situation has been scarey.  I’ve not felt safe or secure in Vancouver.  I’d rather be in a small town outside a major city.  The peninsula of Vancouver is always a traffic jam. When I was on the sailboat I was safe and could get away but here I was with a sense of being trapped.  The election was won by the Liberals again with massive third world immigration, WEF and UN corruption and major Chinese influence.  The Republicans in the south were a safer bet as the world with doddering Biden and constant lies of media was careening towards worsening World War.  Ukraine and Russia fought on.  Israel and Gaza and Iran fought..  Taiwan stood against Communist China and Trudeau idiocy had made everything in Canada scarey.  At least Carney was an adult though personally ideologically a concern.
The fact of the matter is I had justification for upgrading to the Motorhome after seeing Ernest and Nicholina’s.  I would save 3 months of storage when I drove south.  I imagined reducing to just he Motorhome eventually. I loved the Thor.  I love the Thor.
It was a status thing too, In the world of snowbirds the motorhome is class A.  I envied my friends Tiffany and the neighbors Dutch star but truthfully I felt home. I felt I was where I needed to be but didn’t like the debt incurrred but my savings would cover the cost and maintain funds. I didn’t like that Liberal mismanagement o the enconomy and corruption created inflation which reduced my savings punishing the good of Canada, by a third. It’d hard being ruled by sociopaths but countries communist China and Korea are worse.
I’m learning to ‘look on the bright side’ and recommended the Monty Python song and tube version of the choir singing on the crucifixion
I’m away of my character defect and tendency to  catastrophize and to go to self pity.  I know ‘poor me’ is a mental virus’s.  I’m okay today.
I enjoyed the monumental task of buying the Thor and transferring the contents of the Fuzion RV to my new hom at Traveland. Kenny Rogers was a good salesman and like salesman do took advantage but in then end I had the deal. I’d phoned George and George for help with decision making and had the incredible kind, wise and wonderful support of Laura.  Then moving Alina and Alena from Merry Maids helped with Laura and Anna.  Anna was glad to get the Potlach as were Mach and Dave and Ernst.  I had too much ‘stuff’ and was glad to minimize.  I imagine my friend Barb would have sold everything on the Facebook Marketplace and made a few thousand but I enjoyed the happiness of sharing my good time and seeing the joy of windfall in eyes of friends.  It was amazing that it was done and even more amazing when Laura and I drove the Thor to Burnaby.
I was then off with the camper and truck driving across Canada to see the family in Ottawa, visit nephews and great nephews I’d last seen before Covid.  Adell was incredible. I miss my brother and wish he were aicve.  I returned with the hard bottom inflatable and 30 hp.  All the while I continued virtual medicine.  It was a great journey.
I’d learned that I had cataracts and macular degeneration and my eyes need to be monitored with the possibility of surgery in the near future.  Driving and seeing the country was part of that,  Coming home again was great.
Laura and I then took the Thor to Sunshine Valley, our first excursions and all went well,
We attended the International Confrwence of AA at the Vancouver Conveention centre and BC Stadium with some 50,000 people.  What an experience!
Then I drove my HD Nightster Special Motorcycle to Spokane for the IDAA. I spent time with the Cyberdocs friends and Madeline,  I’d seen Dave and Dave at the Int4rnational and then again in Spokane, Tommy was a pleasure to be with, She’s in her mid 80’s now.  It was all uplifting.
The motorcycle ride back in a day was a hoot.  I’m so thankful for God’s grace.,
Now I’m settling into a routine. Laura was here with Madigan but she’s gone home. I’v had the week with him He’s adjusting to all the changes.  We’re getting back to routine,
Meagan and Alan had Maizy, an 8 pd baby girl.
That’s exciting,
We’re booked for hunting in October, the Thanbgiving Weekend. I’m still trying to arrange for a weekend camping with the Thor but all the spots were booked for the Sept 1 long weekend.  Sept 10 is the opening of rifle hunting.  I’ ve called Kevin to see if the Camper is repaired.  Dave came by on the weekend while spent time on Saturday and Sunday retrieving data with Ayden at Apple, I’d made a terrible mistake and almost deleted all my files when I was just trying to clean up ny photo files.
My PAL card arrived in the male but I’m still waiting for the Nexus card though the computer says all is fine,
I’m working on ODATT
I took my 28 year cake at Burnaby Fellowship. Now I’m looking forward to giving George his cake.  It’s a challenge
I’ve work cases involving the courts at Docside but otherwise it’s no challenge
I continue to attend St. Barnabus Anglican Church but haven’t been this month,  Emily has been away on sabbatical.
With the scare of losing files I’ve decided to move forward on writing my books.  So I’ll start editting and printing. It seems such work.  Blogging is so much esaier.  Keeping journals.
I don’t so much wrestle with God as play peek a boo with Jesus,
Thank you God. Thank you Jesus. I aim to maintain an ‘attitude of gratitude’ one day at a time,

IDAA Spokane, Harley Motorcycle Ride Spokane to Burnaby

What a wonderful time I had at the Spokane IDAA. Of the some 25 I’ve attended this one is special especially because of the people.  I must have known a dozen or more incredible people I’ve spent close time with over the years. As I said to John, it really is like ‘Same time Next Year’.  “But without the sex,” he responded.  Yes without the sex. Indeed the sex and intimacy meeting in Al Anon was one of the best.  I really enjoyed a lot of AA. I’d come from the Internatioanl Conference in Vancouver and was immersed in principled and fellowship.  I loved the in depth discussion of the steps and spirituality.  I enjoyed the banquets.  Meals were great. The speakers were outstanding.  600 people. A whole lot of recovery.  I loved Art and his Son Jay doing the count and giving out the big book.  So good to see Marv.  A delight to see Herb and Brandon Dave after just seeing them at the Intrnational.  I loved seeing Madeleine at both. Her house and retirement and kayaking all sound divine and well deserved,  I really enjoyed John and Jennifer.  Akron Dave was the best.  I connected most with people from cyberdocs.  All theses little screen people full blown.  Cole,a magician, suddenly appearing full sized in all her glory caught me off guard.  I had the same feeling about Ben a face I see on Saturday morning suddenly full bodied.  Luna the service dog was regal, I missed my own pup thankful Laura was caring for him.  So many discussions about cats and dogs and all these friend I’ve known a quarter of century telling me their kids have finished college. How did we get so old.
I loved sorting out my Motorcycle at Lone Wolf and Vintage enjoying the rides and the brakes from the Davenport Grand Hotel and Confernce Centre.  Spokane is such a beautiful city. I am so thankful for Tommie as she organized our dinner and I delighted in Elliott’s Neighbourhood kitchen.  Tommie is immersed in recovery in retirement and gives me hope for the future.  So many of us discussed hearing aids this time while others had acquired canes.  I didn’t feel alone and afraid. My colleagues are going before with courage and humor.
The Saturday night speaker, Lithuanian, surgeon, psychiatrist, horse jumper, mother, amazed us with an extraordinary tale of suffering joy and resilience.  It’s so important to be among to the greats. I felt like I was at times among those who’d been on the space station.  Famous names and down to earth folk who were working programs to increase their love and care.  Two more friends had died and I recognized them when we had silence for those we’d lost. Adam made me laugh.  Corrine and Carole remain so beautiful.  I loved seeing Julie but missed the dance.  There were so many I’ve known nd shared with.  Charles, my psychiatrist friend warmed my heart with his wisdom.  In past meetings I’d made every psychiatry break out but this one I was focused on Dick’s early bird and the Cyberdocs.  Attitude of Gratitude.  There’s at least a dozen more I was close to but now they are just a swirl of love and joy.  I am so thankful to be sober and with a higher power and with others who work to be better each day.  It’s truly humbling to be among such greats and to feel their love and care.  I laughed so much and cried a little.
I left early Sunday, at 630 am.  I thanked God for keeping me safe on the ride down and was glad to be away praying all day to stay awake and live.  It was a magnificent ride among wheat fields and evergreens.  I find the Cascades a challenge just like coming into LA.  Curving high speed highways with racing trucks and cars crowding all round and intense attention.  I was so glad to be through and coasting into Seattle. Then up the well known number 5. Despite my Nexus Card being out of date the kindly customs waved mine through. It’s right on the computer and for a year now I’ve been waiting for Canada Post to sort out its strike threats and get me a new card.  I’m waiting on a bank card replacement.  So much for slow mail all much longer delays.  Yet humans who are kind and with it.  I was glad to be back in Canada. I love coming home.  Then I was home,’
Dog ecstatic, running in circles, jumping up and down, bringing me toys. I was glad I’d stopped and bought him a bone. I hugged my dearest friend Laura and was so glad to be back in my Thor Hurricane Home.  I drank several cokes and ginger ales.  Dehydrated. The ride had been hot.  I was glad to unload the leathers and get into shorts and t shirt.  Laying down on my couch in the air conditioning. Thank you God for keeping me alert and alive. Thank you God for such a wonderful conference. I even enjoyed the CME but mostly the people. I truly am blessed to know such angels.  Next year Chicago.  I am so thankful for this year.  It’s been such a rush returning from southern Californian, Fountain of Youth, then Harrisons’ and buy the Thor and driving the camper truck with Vespa to Ottawa and returning towing the motorboat.  Then taking the Thor to Sunshine Valley and returning for the international and motorcycling to Spokane and back.  All the while I’ve maintained my practice and continued to learn with audiobooks and study.  It’s a wonderful life thanks to God , sobriety, a design for living, and the love of friends. I’m normally fairly reclusive but these intense weeks with so many people celebrating life have been so rewarding.
Now I’m back to my routine and looking forward to it. Thank you Jesus.

Egomaniac with inferiority complex

I first heard that 28 years ago and thought that sums up my dilemma perfectly.  I also heard the words ‘incomprehensible demoralization’ and felt sympatico again.  Today I don’t feel the shame, anger, hurt or self pity I once did. I just had a lovely dinner with friends I’ve known decades.  I was simply thankful. Great food, great service, great company.  I am blessed.
Thank you.

IDAA Spokane 2025. To thine own self be true

I’m loving this conference, The Spokane Convention Center has great acoustics and is such a friendly place.  I’m staying in the Grand Hotel and it’s perfect,  I like the showers and bed and view. There’s a great tv I watched on night
The rest of the time has been going to CME meetings and recovery meetings. I just love all the friends I’ve come to know since my first meeting in Toronto 1998.  I miss Hank and do many other old guy and gal I came to know and be close to but have now passed on.  We call it the great meeting in the sky.  So many of my mentors have been 10 years older or so and now I’m older and it’s been a good life in recovery serving and being among the best of the best.
I’ve even had time to ride my motorcycle in town on errands. It’s also been fixed up, the break fluid and oil leak solved so I’m prepared and looking forward to the ride home.
So happy to be among the cyberdoc group in person.  The banquets and food have been the best.
It’s only just begun too
Thank you God, Thank you nous.  Thank you soul, Thank you heart. Thank you Imago Deo.  Thank you Jesus. Thank you Sam Shoemaker and Father Dowling, Thank you Carl Jung and Emerson. Thank you for all you have opened their eyes and looked to hope and possibility with resilient faith.  Thank you for IDAA.
Tonight was the New comers banquet and another inspirational time.
Next year Chicago,

October Weekend

It was a busy full October weekend. Despite the rain. Early Friday I drove with Madigan to the camper where I found my keys. Hooray. On the way back I had a Macdonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese while Madigan had his burgher patty. I was able to get m Mail and thankful to MBNA. They contacted me more than five years later to say I had more than a thousand on my card I’d not used since moving.
was able to pick up tha laundry which I’d had done after the hunting trip. She actually tried to give me someone else’s laundry before finding mine, the confusion for me was a parrot shirt I’d worn a decade or more ago. I opened up the bag though and his wasn’t  Calvin Klein underwear. When she got the right bag the Calvin Klein underwear with all the cammo clothing was the giveaway. She was so apologetic.
I also had my nails done at Professional Nails, I opted for red for Christmas early since I’d list had black. I would have done better with orange for keeping with the season.
I could have gone hunting again and could in November but I’m hurting. I had one hot tub and swim and took Madigan for a long walk. Mostly I don’t like snow and ice. Not just for me personally but there’s heavy wear and tear on trucks and ATV and Camper. I’m looking forward to taking the truck and camper south for a time this Christmas and don’t want to take any unnecessary risks with those plans.  Laura will be flying down to meet me as she has less time off from work. I’m ready to put the guns and gear away though I had hoped for a deer.
Saturday I was able to make my virtual meeting. I pray
And meditate most mornings but this uplifting meeting took precedence. I’d hoped to attend the evening speaker meeting where my Boston friend was to be speaker but I was off an hour on the time. Ironically I checked in at the end discussion to see Barb who I’d encouraged to join years ago. She mentioned that I’d told her the conference was subsidized. We were glad to see each other and Mary wanted to see my nail color.
I’d been late because I couldn’t find the meeting on the IDAA site and had trouble translating EST to PST. It was at 5. I’d been to Rogina’s Yum Gallery show of her paintings and sculpture, Gods and Monsters. It was an apt title. Thought provoking and disturbing. Dante. But there was no separation so the messag is this is us or we are among them. I’m focusing on the uplifting and inspiring but enjoyed the expulsion of demons and timely at Halloween.
I’d walked Madigan along the autumn trails with yellow and orange leaf decoration.
This morning I was thankful to finally return to church. A lovely service. Emily had been in Rome the week before meeting the Pope. She was inspired as was the service. Madigan was well behaved. I noted a beautiful woman who’d gain weight in Covid was back to her sexy self as was one of the men. Another fellow I’d last seen looking ill appeared have recovered. The children were growing and happy. I like the aspect of community seeing takes overtime as together we worship and celebrate the divine.
Now I’m home and have the rest of the day to work or play with. I’ve have coffee toast with marmalade and a hard boiled egg. I might have a nap or even a swim. Madigan would like another walk but now is content to chew on a bone.
Thank you Jesus. Thank you God. Thank you higher power.

Tucson Conference Friday

Before I came she showed me a picture she painted of me.  Like the photograph I took of myself in the islands.  The artistic self.  Not the warrior. Not the provider protector. But rather the gentle one.  I struggle today with the disparate history.  I am among a tribe, a neighbourhood, a community.  Many here welcome me. I sit at any table and am welcomed. There are none I don’t like. Many I simply don’t know. So many I know I admire. I’m alone in one sense but in so many I’m among my own.  Each of us unique but otherwise so similiar.

I missed the main speaker.  Family origins and trauma. I see these considerations more as fads and fashions.  Each day the world begins and the old Menninger Triangle and the Transactional analysis material is less than the presence of self.  Today is a day for God. I suffer gender dysphoria but mostly in cross dressing. I like to wear skirts, vestigial celtic leftover of the tartan kilt but it’s the silks and satins that appeal

The ladies recognised my nail polish as Lincoln Park after Dark. I laughed that two separately commented and three discussed this. It was like listening to men talk of sports and touch downs.  I’d like to know the names of colours more than than the names of various teams. I’m changing with age and want to adventure into observer but curious not paranoid.

I can’t underestimate the stress of surviving in this dog eat dog survival of the fittest jungle.  Mostly it’s doing the ‘right thing’.  It’s also accepting. The world is this way.  I don’t feel much joy in application of band aids but the demonstration of kindness is good .I’m releasing my own judgemental ness, getting to the bottom of the law of attraction.

As above so below.  That which I love and hate I attract. If I am judgemental and emotionally entrenched in sone position I bring more of that forward.  Even now the grief of not having children and moving towards the end of life is heavy. Yet I would not have it any other way.  We say we will not ‘regret the past’.  I can’’t change the past but I can change my perspective of it and embrace the myriad facets of myself.   I have loved and been loved. I ‘ve loved in conventional and unconventional ways so I ‘m okay .

I have masturbated and my whole life and even today is heightened by the beauty of women . Yet there’s a sense of the individual beyond form. There’s the souls which shine in intimacy and the overall package loses appeal. I don’t like fatness and yet it feels good. The emphasis on sight yet in the moment of coupling comfort is paramount.  What I miss though is the fitness, the athletes dancing.  I am at a loss with the physical pain of aging and the limitation and vulnerability of this back injury.

It’s all psychosomatic, my pain as much a matter of emotion and past as mechanics.  I imagine if my election was robust and I could lift a woman with her back against the wall and plunge my penis into the joy of her vagina I’d be fine. But today I’m afraid to lift most anything. I don’t find that I’m orgasmic with the thrust and miss the youth and premature ejactualtion threat when holding on to make it last and hopefully bring more pleasure to the love was all so important. But then I realized I was working at cross purposes .  The central dishonesty of sexual congress with me struggling to pleasure and arounse the woman, bringing platters of treats to the princess was little more than feeding the raccoons.

Love your neighbour as yourself. I’ve been generous and kind in love and offered to pleasure in whatever way but that’s been rebuked. The whole feminist Marxist attack on the marriage bed has defined the last decade. Everywhere I turn I see self proclaimed victims and I’m attacked constantly in media and by the Marxist allies. The authorities are deeply evil and I’m punished by racists and sexists whose slick constructionist arguments no longer have any appeal.  They shout ‘me first…..me firsts.

I feel at war and want to drift down the stream and fear I’m alone. I’m more vulnerable and don’t feel protected or even safe with those I know . It’s all the betrayal.

Yet here I am alive. I’ve obviously complained too much and had too much self pity. I’m feel I’m in the autum of my life and the other seasons were magnificent.

It’s what to do next and there’s no rush.  The months and may be years are fine. I’m fine. I’m progressing but I don’t feel clearly the plan that God has for me. I turn my life over to the care of God.  I ask to know his will and to serve. I’m moving along but wonder at the anchors that hold me in a past that I’m shedding like a skin. What is the future. Who am I.

I must lose weight and become healthy again. I don’t feel that I’m joined in this critical task by those who I am closest to . They’ve lived a life of luxury and hedonism and their bodies like mine show the emotional stuffing and unwillingness to address the central anxiety

Denial of death and fear of death and fear of dying are all central now as so many of those close have passed over. I’m falling and want to fly.  Life is an adventure.  I don’t want to go gentle into that still night.  Rage Rage against the dying of the life. Rather I’d dance.  I simply must counteract the effect of the office desk and seat with a lot more effort and healthy living.

Thank you Jesus. More comfort in a crowd for me today. My mind is one. My heart another, my body another.  I’m balancing and walking a tightrope forward.  Thank you Jesus.

Tucson Conference

“Look for the similarities,  not the differences,’ he told me years ago.  I’m terminally unique. I have a sense of alienation and really do feel that if people like me there’s something wrong with them or some kind of catch.  Trauma responses.  Character flaws.  I’m waiting for the next shoe to drop.   I remember feeling a part of when I was drinking and smoking dope. I fit in the circle I was in.

I have had such support. So many miracles. The people here have truly ‘loved me till I could love myself”.  I was so filled with shame after the betrayals, losses and negative associations.  This program is all about honesty.  I was raised in a Christian community with Christian parents and honesty was essential.  In the last years before I stopped drinking I associated with chronic liars.  Compulsive liars.  And Political liars.  I understood their lack of truth.  Fear is the basis of so much but those that supported them were the problem.  Proxy violence and mob mentality. I was confronted with ‘nests’ and had thought there was only one.  They were like a hospital infection.  The insaniety was real. I wanted to be there then.  Now I look back and it’s like this part of my mind is a mine field.

“Your mind is a bad neighbourhood. You shouldn’t go there alone,” he said.

There are a dozen other Canadians here.  Maybe a couple of dozen psychiatrists.  Some single.  Most seem to be married with families.  Lots of Al Anon. Lots of couples . So many of the gay doctors are themselves married. I feel alone. Different. I once felt young and new but now I’m old and I’ve paid my dues.

We’ve not seen anyone come back from where you’ve been before.’ She was thanking me and looking at me in awe. Resilience but then she didn’t know about all the doctors here who’d held me up till I could stand alone.

Now I still want to isolate. I’m so raw. Talking openly with these men and women I’ve known decades and admire so deeply.

“I used to have goals and plans and projects and knew where I was going to be in 5 years. I was aiming for things. I had grand adventures and goals and purpose. Now it’s like there’s success all around . I’ve friends and purpose .  Serving God.  Helping patients.  But no real vision.  I’m really living day by day.  Other’s are retiring and I’m continuing to work if only because I’ve nothing better to do . My projects are putting a rack on the front of my truck to carry my truck.  Empty the storage locker.  Let Go and Let God. Surrender.  Drop the rock.  I’m getting through ODAT but no longer on a flight from demons well aware of the hound of heaven.  Be still and know that I am god.

I’m waiting for a sign I guess.

I’ve sexual identity issues.  So many old people loose interest but I don’t want to go that route. I want to dance till I die. I want to do more hikes and live.  I’m not ready for the sedentary life .  I long to travel, swim more, explore.  Yet I like to work and have reduced the hours from 80 to 40 and might work less yet.  I’ve a sail boat that waits on shore and I could sell it or crew it and all it needs to cross and ocean is anti fouling paint and some topside paint. It’s been on land for five years. I’d rather just take my truck and camper and motorcycle and explore the US and Canada by land.

I loved Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley and want to write more.  I like to write. I like to visit art galleries and museums, read history and novels.  I’m not as excited by chemistry as I once was.  I’m changing and don’t know who I’ll be in a year.  I don’t like wearing parkas anymore and miss sailing in the tropics dressed in khakis or sarong. I’m looking forward to leaving Canada when the snow flies . It’s as far ahead as I can plan.  Working virtual.  Laura continues to work and our schedules weave in and out.  We were apart in Covid and back together.  I’m happiest in her company .  She’s my favourite human.

Now I’ve a meeting to got to .  The newcomers introduced themselves and I remembered how afraid I was back then.  Now I’m still searching for God’s will.  But today I head that the key was simply the searching. Each day I wake with prayer and ask for guidance.  It’s worked so far.  Dave shared he still has niggling fears as Tommy spoke about her moments of uncertainty but we all spoke of those unspeakable moments of joy. Practicing the presence of God.

Tucson Conference

IDAA….the flight down was long.  I’m awake at 4 am because I had to wake yesterday that early to arrive here for the teen banquet.  It’s hot.  Desert country.  The taxi was a hundred dollars from the Airport.  I talked to the taxi driver about treating vets with PTSD, Harley Davidson Motorcycles and  fine quality of American highways compared to Canada.  Like Rome’s whose roads hundreds of years later were  still evident  in Europe.  Like their Aquaducts.  Thinking of Time , permanence and impermanence.
I checked in at the Hilton EL Conquistaor resort.  War and rumours of war. I’ve just read about the American invasion of Mexico, their conquering of Mexico City and annexing of half the Mexico of the day, California, New Mexico, Texas and some of Arizona.

The first person I saw I recognised was my flamboyantly gay colleague from California.  He’s was in deep conversation with a couple and by the time I’d checked in he was gone. I saw more I knew then, shaking hands, hugging, being welcomed and thoroughly feeling a part of.  These were my people. My tribe.   I stopped at the gift shop and bought a bathing suit having realized on the hot ride over I’d forgotten mine.  Everywhere was air conditioning.  Glorious air conditioning.

Tucson is a city in the desert with lots of trees and khacky shrubbery and cactus but also desert and bare high hills.  Hard for me coming from the Canadian Rockies to call them mountains. I missed the emerald green forests of my home.  The terrain and territory of this oonference spoke to survival.  The land here was tough.  Where I come from nativies have used words like ‘Comox’ which means abundance to describe their homeland. . Here it’s definitely a place where folk have carved out an existence and fought against the desert to make an existence.

40 degrees.  I felt it after my shower walking to the teen banquet.  The Conquistado resort is spread out. I’m in the second three floor building across from the main resort conference centre.  The banquet was down the hill and I walked with a truly beautiful woman who was wearing white cowboy boots , white hat and baby blue frilly western dress.
“You still have the tag on your cowboy hat,”  I said.

“I know ,’ she said , “I wasn’t strong enough to break the tie.  Do you think you could do it.”

I was glad to, Helping a beautiful young lady in distress does an man’s heart good. Following her I met up with my friends of years, the quite handsome, tall John with his loving beatuiful wife. They were with another couple.   I was now part of a group of 6, maybe the oldest with the beauty queen cowgirl, by far the youngest.  We headed down to the banquet where all sorts of friendship bloomed.  I was simply enthralled to see my colleagues of decades.  Hugh,  Nathan, Dave,  Art, Daryl , Julie, and so many more.

After Covid some still bumped knuckles in greeting but most shook hands and hugged. It was good to be home. I realized with the joy of joining how alone I’d felt,

My closest of  friends of have ed in the last few years.  My parents were gone, then my brother. And George I met in rehab. We’d go for dinner and a meeting once a month. Sharing, reminiscing.  Never was their a finer friend. He called these our ‘soul food’ times because we had sole at the famed Chez Michel.  He was like a brother to me and for decades we shared so much.  I cry thinking of him and my brother. Then my friend John died.  His son Luke has had a baby since.  Called me and I’ve yet to visit.  I loved his father. He;’d had a horseback jumping accident and become paraplegic like Supervamn.  He once said to me as we were walking and wheeling, walking our dogs , “You know I think I’d rather be in this chair, than your head.”

John,my psychiatrist friend introduced me to his wife , “This is Bill, “ to some of us, ‘wild bill in purely affectionate way. “’

I was so thankful Dave was there. H’d survived his recent heart surgery. Saw him virtually in an office gown in recovery.  Darryl was looking more stooped  but I remember when we were all younger .  Now we looked at the older men. We were all a  little stooped. I complain about my back ache these days but I still stand mostly up right. Over dinner I shared that sex hurts because of the back pain.  One colleague said he too is  not having sex much because of the pain but another’s wife commented about their marriage, “I’m thankful we don’t have that problem.”  She smileed at her husband who hardly blushed

“I lost Vivian to Covid last year. She was a grandmother , Medicine woman, decades sober, very active in AA. She became an Anglican priest. I loved to serve on the Aboriginal Urban Ministry with her.  She worked with the street natives. We would have a banquet. I’d shoot bear and venison and give her lots of meat for these because I didn’t particularly like bear meat.  But I gave her moose too so I was generous.  I enjoyed the irony that the big native feasts east year were suppled by a white man.  I miss her though.  I don’t realize how much grief has taking ti’s toll in my life in recent years.”.

She was a beautiful young woman from Louisiana and I told her about my first psychiatrist mentor from the south, Hank Olivier.  “We met in 97 at the meeting in Toronto’s.  He feigned he needed help finding a Tilly hat. It was his sneaky way of getting me out of myself . I’d felt such shame and remorse coming to that meeting, celebrating’ We are not alone’.  I’d been so stigmatized and isolated , bullied and truly rumbled. In a divorce and not working I’d thought I’d leave psychiatry and return to general practice, missing the collegiality I’d known in my year of surgical residency. Now here I was betrayed and lied to by the drunken drug abusing psychiatrists that I’d chosen to be among.
————-
I’ll never forget Graham saying to me in those days I contemplated suicide and thought I only had God. “Some people run with the cheetah’s and some people run with the Turkeys. You’ve surely been running with the turkeys.’  Those were the years before UBC became the shining light it has become today.  I remember the head of psychiatry and my self talking about our quitting ringing in a meeting of AA.  It was a big meeting in North Vancouver with lots of celebrities from the movies being made in Hollywood North.  I  remember saying to one fellow getting coffee with me, “You know you look a lot like…..”.  “Yea, I get that a lot.’  I sat down with my friend Julie, who was on Baywatch with Pamela Anderson at the beginning of the show. Just sitting with Julie was special. She was the sexiest most head turning woman I’d ever known.  My friend Bill from Fort Gary childhood whose sister was my brother’s friend used to sit with us and we’d make such a fun time of it.

Did you see the guy who looked like,….?” I asked Julie.

He doesn’t just look like….. He is him.  I talked to him at the beginning of the meeting. WE were in a show together.

Just about the most greatest actor in Canada and Holly wood I’d say.

“He’s a real spokesman for recovery too,’ she said.

Now here I was with my other Julie friend. The gorgeous brilliant New York ballerina Julie.  We’ve talked dance for years and visiting art galleries and d museums. I love New York and talked about my friend Laura. “She taking care of my dog at my home right now,”.

The halibut, burghers, salad made a fine meal. I drank lots of iced lemonade and iced tea.  I was sharing with my plastic surgeon friend.  I’m suspicious because they never seem to grow older looking handsome and lovely as the day met them , a cover girl and a cover boy.  Meanwhile the rest of us seem to have a whole lot more wrinkles.

“One day I think I need a face lift and the next day I rather like the wrinkles.’

“I’ve made a living taking taking them away,’ he laughed.

The psychiatrist with us added “I’m not sure I’d want to lose mine since they’re the one thing I truly have earned myself,”.

I thought then of the years of sailing in trade winds and the open sea.  The wrinkles I see in the mirror always remind me of that and I don’t want to forget the days outdoors.

Another rabbit hopped along the sidewalk as I returned to my room that night saying a series of good nights. I’d notice a whole lot of rabbits by the air port and thought it must be a cycle of proliferation. They come and go.  I had talked some of hunting  with a man who fished sharing that I’m not as keen to hunt as I once was, if only because the work of bringing in big game is so overwhelming. I’m thinking of fishing more remembering my father shifting that way in his 70’s and 80’s .

“I’d shared over dinner with John How I tried my big electro glide motorcycle I’d ridden to the meeting in Colorado on and another time at the Portland meeting, for a new smaller Nightster Special and how much more I enjoyed it.  Like grouse hosting versus deer hunting. “I’m considering selling my 14 ton sailboat for a smaller one I could handle solo without such work and effort.”

“You ‘re getting ‘right sized” John said and laughed . We talk abot about ego especially egomania with inferiority complexes.  .  Yes I guess. I’ am , finally I’d said.

It was so good to see all the old friends and then to meet Ann the psychiatrist  and Rick both decades sober in Rhode Island and the Carolinas but at their first IDAA meeting. We were reassuring a necomer.  “I got into drugs and alcohol and lost everything. I was so down I was living on the streets and someone convinced me to go into treatment. I did and it’s been 9 years . Now friends have convinced me to return to work as a psychiatrist and I’m shadowing a colleague at the hospital and being facing review to have my licences fully restored. A lot has changed since I quit work for booze,’ he said.  “I’m studying and being revived for my knowledge. I’d thrown myself i onto recovery after treatment and I’m pretty solid in that regards.

Ann had told him that ‘we re thought of as better than before for so many.’  Like broken bones that heal stronger.

“I was a program director for many years,’ Rick shared . “We were all so glad to have people who’d fallen and risen back up return. They ‘d shown real resilience and character and related so well with patients offering so much more than they had before.

Daryl laughed, “I was drinking a micky a day when I was head of the alcohol treatment program in our hoss;pitas. I certainly was a much better doctor when I got sober.

“I had a DUI and that’s what brought me to the attention of the authorities.  I was glad for the monitoring. No one could doubt me after that and I’d found as anoyiong it was I found it helped.

I felt warm and cozy like a late night cookies and milk treat my mom sometimes gave me when I couldn’t sleep.

Last night I slept really well. No nightmares.  I’d shared our gun stories with another psychiatrist. The patients pulling guns on us and demanding narcotics or bentos.  I was thankful to laugh about us getting out of the situations. “I was supervising a resident watching through two way mirror when the patient pull;ed a gun on the resident who smoothly said he’d have to discuss this with his supervisor and stepped out to talk to me the patient following with the gun and now me the resident and patient with the gun all continuing the discussion.  He said he’d had a few of those occasions working in forensics with the vets.  “I was in charge of a group. They’d all killed and they were all packing and I admit it was pretty dicey at times but such a good feeling to watch them settle down after their years of deployment, the paranoid dissipate. I don’t think one had a gun on him when we had our last meeting together.  ‘

The air is dry and fresh here.  The sun has risen over the bare brown hill and the sky is a turguoise blue like the jewelry worn here.  Since I’m up I’m going to make it to the early morning Attitude of Gratitude meeting I used to attend when Hal was alive.  So many have died but I’ve known them and been touched to the very core by knowing them.  Art was so proud. All my sons are in recovery now, he said.  I remember his wife Carole and he at the Portland meeting having dinner with another psychiatrist and his wife sharing their concerns and anxiety about their children ‘s addictions and how they were handling it and their hopes they’d find their way out of the misery.  Art’s son was taller than d his father, what people would call a ‘strapping young man’.

Standing in line for burgehers I said to Art, “you’re a good father’.  “It’s been a long haul but we’re feeling a lot more hope these days and I’m thankful I’m still doing it.”

Art had been my mentor when I worked in the states. He was on the executive of the American Psychiatric Association at the time and I’d phone him late at night to discuss a difficult patient especially the ones with PTSD from the militartym.  My said had been RCAF and Art was Air Force too.  A decade older and truly an inspiration.  I feel it in my heart seeing him.  He’s stooped a bit now. He’s had surgery for his knees afte all that jumping out of planes and carrying heavy packs overwrought terrain.  His wife had told him when the children were little, “You can either have me or the bottle .”  “Best decision I ever made, said Art looking across at the beautiful blond whose stood by his side all these years.

It’s as Ptttsburgh and we’d all gone off to the Andry Warhol. Museum with Hank who’d been a flight surgeon in the Navy begore coming into recovery .  We’d laughed at and with Art who couldn’t see the merit in a soup can painting. There was some big Pittsburgh game playing that night and we were talking football and Andy Warhol and Hank was asking me about the time I served in Churchill and was chasers by polar bears.

“We are not a glum lot,”. The banner statement shared one year. I’ve yet to know what this theme is this conference.  I’ll earne today .  I missed registration so didn’t have a name tag at the meriting. “I’m truly anonymous,” I quipped and an old timer I ‘ve known decades, said, “I”m sorry I’ve known you forever but I’ve forgotten your name. I’m having some troubles with my memory.”   I was hearing him through the hearing aids I was still adjusting

“Bill” I said. Smiling. I’m here feeling sorry for myself thinking of all the friends I’ve lost and here’s my friend of decades, another psychiatrist colleague, aging gracefully and slowly losing his mind.

I still cry thinking of that first meeting in Toronto and the banner, “We are not alone,”. Hank and the search for a Tilly Hat and that feeling of coming home.  Now here I am again

Gratitude Saturday

I’m pleased to be awake.  The day is good. Sunny warm. Madigan is a nutbar.  Jumped on my crotch when he figured I was waking.  Acted like he was innocent.  I did sit cross legged after and pray and meditate. I like peace of mind. The exercise quiets the fears and resentments.  Next I physically exercised.
My morning crisis was the shortage of ground expresso. I have instant but I had just enough for a cup of coffee. I’m roasting Ethiopian green beans right now.  I attended my zoom meeting of IDAA cyberdocs on one coffee.  Listened and didn’t offer to share.
I walked the dog. He was jumping up and down making it difficult to attach his leash as usual. Then he was piddling everywhere, A prolific pee mail contributor. I liked the birds though I believe a crow has moved into the tree where I saw the hummingbirds.
There wasn’t much on social media.  Too often I let it skew my emotional self.  I like it for the models and campfires and dogs and cats.  The advertising is sneaky.  Minor concerns.
I’m really grateful to be alive.  I love the spring and summer.  A light breeze with flower blossoms making it look like pink snow.  I walked with Peter and Lucy and Bella and he commented on them earlier this week. Today we met with Dave and Emory.

“I’ve got new saddlebag’s, “. I said.

“I just took my bags off to streamline my bike,” said Dave

“I miss the lean and mean look but love the convenience of saddlebags if only to carry bungee cords.”

“Do they come off easily.”

“I expect so , “ I haven’t tried. I was thinking that I have to test the head set and see if I can interface my iPhone with the motorcycle.  Elon Musk announced a Neuro chip test recently.  I’m happy with computer enhancements.  Loved watching the French Sci Fi Valerian and the world of a thousand planets.

Emory was glad to see his pal Madigan and they walked together .  Emory is old and can only make it to the office and back.  He has a funny lope gait as he bounces to stay with us.  He doesn’t seem older in intention.

Terry shared he was 77 and Milton said he was dating a new girl at 78.  “My last partner was beautiful and I had money whereas this one is a PHD and we can’t get off the phone talking.”  He sounded like a teen ager.  Another woman shared she was 61 , that her mother lived to 90 so she was on her back 30.  Nathan had begun it all saying a friend told him he had another decade to go and as that was 2 years ago he figured he had 8 years left.

I find myself thinking of the finiteness of life.  I’m presently preparing for my winter project taking the camper and motorcycle and satellite dish to Arizona to avoid the month of cold and snow. I have dreamed of being a snow bird since I lived in Winnipeg despite spending a year in Mexico and a year in California and years in the Marianas Islands. Last year I had a month in Yuma and loved it but didn’t like returning to the snow and ice. So that’s the project.  I’m year to year I guess. I enjoy working and the virtual possibility makes it even better.  I was at the clinic yesterday and enjoyed the new people serving and contributing.  I was also glad to be earning money as it payed for my saddlebags. Now that they’re on the bike I can look at the rack for the front of the truck which will allow me to carry it with me.

I booked a weekend in Harrisons for Laura and I. I wanted to be by a lake so I could swim. Garry recommended more of it for my back.  My back is just sore and stiff but doens’t have the sharp pains and the severe weakness as much now, since I’ve been exercising more. Camping and quadding and doing these things on the weekend are really active and I hurt but it’s good hurt when I come back. Too much time on the couch watching tv and snacking.  Good to be getting healthy.

Thank you God for this life. Thank you for this creation and for my being in this creation. Thank you for friends and Madigan. Thank you for work and colleagues. Thank you Jesus!

IDAA 2019 Knoxville, Tennessee, Part 1

I enjoyed flying United despite Vancouver to Knoxville taking most of a day. I had reservations at the Hilton on Church Street.  Great rooms and service.  The Knoxville Convention Centre, 2 blocks away, is a fine venue for IDAA.  Lots of rooms, pleasant service. Good acoustics.
I arrived at the beginning of the New Comerr’s banquet. This always takes me back to my own first IDAA. Those stewing feelings, a keen mixture of fear and resentment, some curiosity, with a teeniest touch of hope.
This year was IDAA’s  70th anniversary.  The planning committee captured the history of the association with posters and presentation. I bought the book IDAA: The First Sixty Years 1949-2009 edited by Gordi Hyde MD.  I love the pictures as much as the text.
Clarence Pearson a friend of Bill Wilson’s, founded the organization in 1949.  I’d heard a lot about Luke Reed. I’ve personally been blessed to know the McKinleys, Hyde’s, Syferts and most recently the Metcalf’s..
Immediately I was hugging and being hugged by old friends. I’d already seen Nathan surrounded by young people at the airport.  Art and Carole and Bobbi and Tom always light up my heart.  Dick and Cheryl are so uplifting.  Graeme C. Randy A. Tommy, Traci, Jeff, Madeleine, Ryan, Merv,  so many others. Old friends just appear out of the heavens like so many angels.
With a belly full of good food, great stories and recovery I slept well.  I joked that normally I spiritually crawl into this meeting on my belly. This time I was actually walking.
IDAA makes it possible for me to practice medicine and psychiatry. The inspiration and like minded doctor experience has been essential. Thanks to Ray B. Toronto was my first meeting.  I met Hank, the Louisiana Psychiatrist there. For years till his death he’d ground me and inspire me.  When the system and powers were more psychotic that the patients I was treating his humour kept me going.
Hal’s ‘Attitude of Gratitude’ meeting began 7 am.  I loved the stories people shared of Hal. He was so kind to me when I first came to IDAA.   He chaired a meeting at the White House. His wife, a graceful ball room dancer  would delightfully dance with me at meetings.  Hal, laughing,  loved to watch us do Viennese waltz in the hallways of IDAA.
The Al Anon family meeting was so enjoyable.  My friend Bobbi was one of the speakers.  The meeting broke up into discussion and sharing around each table.
The LGBT meeting, with tales of stigma, anger, shame , and then recovery with dignity followed.
I loved the cyber doc break out, seeing Dave and Zeke and a cast of others I normally only read on line.
Medical issues in recovery, how to treat pain and injury without opiates and when to use opiates was extremely informative. Casey’s Law discussion by a leading lawyer was very stimulating.
The Psychiatrist break out for me is always the best.  We share about the mix of work and recovery and family and recreation.  It was great to see Charles and Darryl again. Something about their sense of humour just appeals to me.
The CME has been great too.  Virtual Recovery, a great review digital research advances in apps for the phone to help predict and prevent relapse.
Penny, another psychiatrist, is the new executive director, She presented on Contemporary Music and Addiction, pointing out the promotion of heroin in the new rap, pop and metal songs of today. She celebrated the progress in the industry too.
By contrast the presentation on Primary Prevention , with the Other Side movies and programs made for high schools was so promising,.
It’s been two days and there’s two more to go.  I’ve just had a swim and plan to head over to the nearby Market area of Knoxville. I ‘ve already walked around it in a break ,enjoying historic and funky ambience.
It‘s just been 2 days. There are two more to come.  I love IDAA.  I’ve signed up for next year’s Spokane IDAA 2020. The people here are the most fantastic.  I learn more CME in the hallways and discussing cases over coffee,  I still enjoy all the meetings. I always order audio tapes and spend the rest of the year listening to the conference again while driving my truck in the country.
Thank you all.  Again you’ve restore my faith in my fellow men and women , in medicine and psychiatry and help me appreciate my own small contribution.
