Other than in the mirror I had never seen a praying mantis till this one appeared on my doorstep in Costa Rica. I recognised him immediately as a kindred spirit. He is named I suppose for his shape rather than his story. But his story really calls for prayer indeed. The male praying mantis upon making love to his precious wife suddenly finds at mutual orgasm, she literally bites his head off. She thereby gets the nutrients to conceive her young and no doubt writes poetry thereafter about her tasty impaler.
